Surreal happenings in Big D

I was pretty busy yesterday morning at work so I didn’t hear about T.O.’s “attempted suicide” until around lunch time. Like nearly everyone else I was shocked. If you had been watching ESPN you expected to see T.O. in a straight jacket under 24 hour watch. So guess my surprise when I saw him at his press conference. He was acting quite calm and normal. I can’t say the same about his publicist. Did she really think saying: “Terrell has 25 million reasons why he should be alive” was a good idea? The whole day was surreal, something you could say about T.O.’s career of late.

The first time I really paid attention to T.O. was the 1998 playoff game between San Francisco and Green Bay when he caught the winning touchdown. He dropped some key passes early in the game but he came through big in the end. He really became a household name in 2000 when he celebrated on the Dallas Cowboy’s star. I knew the Cowboys were no longer a championship caliber team when no one on the team killed him for it. After that incident the coverage of him escalated with every move he made. Yet as ubiquitous as he is, I do enjoy watching him play. He’s the best receiver in the NFL and he has the ability to break one for a touchdown every time he touches the ball. Off the field he annoys me, but I do find him somewhat entertaining. I know I shouldn’t watch him throw quarterbacks under the bus, but I can’t take my eyes off his antics. (And that’s not an euphemism for anything buddy.)

Well yesterday whether you wanted to or not, you couldn’t take your eyes off him. As much of a famewhore he is, I’ll place this one completely on the media’s back. They got that police report and ran with it all the way, not bothering to let the fact that they didn’t actually know anything get in the way. The reaction of people ranged from people feeling sorry for this “troubled soul” to people wishing they could pour more pills down his throat to finish the job. I spent a lot of the afternoon emailing my sister as we made snarky comments on the media coverage. Finally T.O. did his press conference and it quieted the storm a little. Now we’ll have to listen to all the amateur psychiatrist try to explain his psyche. One thing I’m sure of, T.O. will love the attention.
